There is great interest in the modern way of life in tiny houses. After all, various studies show that the so-called “Indoor Generation” spends far too much time in closed rooms anyway. A lot of living space is not necessarily inviting, and people tend to leave the house more often. Although it seems as if many tiny house owners really enjoy being outside, Fabian Low also proves that there is no lack of quality of life indoors.
Fabian Low is a New Zealander who was born in Singapore and lives in the Aukland region. In 2020, he decided to build this mini 30 sq.m container house to live independently. For this, he invested at the time a sum of approximately 135,000 € after having dreamed in front of numerous videos on YouTube. He hired Shaye Boddington, a New Zealand contractor, to build his house.
The 43-year-old explains in the video, “When I first learned about container homes at school, I thought it was a modern way of living,” adding that “he’s not a fan of big spaces,” preferring to “easy to live”. That’s why the man, who was born in Singapore, decided to live in a tiny house.
Thanks to this professional, the construction of the structural work only took two months. But it was he who designed the entire architecture and interior of the house.
This is a well-designed tiny house, which focuses on quality of life, versatility, multifunction, and connection to the community.
It took him about three months to get the equipment in his house ready to go, and he did a lot of research on equipment to bring him water and electricity.
Parts of the house are equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow a view of the natural landscape.
In addition, the terrace is equipped with an outdoor kitchen, in which Low mainly cooks Asian dishes.
The home has been designed around entertaining and the ability to accommodate friends while also creating space for things that Fabian is passionate about such as his music.
The house is installed on the land of a farm, which is rented, himself being the owner only of the house itself. In return for the agreement he has with the farmer, he took care of developing and maintaining the land, where there was once only a chicken coop.
Low has found happiness in the hilly countryside of Auckland with his wife Stephanie. He works in the mental health industry, before that he was an architect. He also received a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Lincoln University in 2004 and a master’s degree in urban design from the University of Auckland in 2010.
A graduate in landscape architecture since 2004 and in urban design since 2010, he, therefore, had the skills required to complete this carefully thought-out 30m2 mini container house project.
His tiny house also has a kitchen area where he can also garden. Next to it is a lounge where he reads and meditates. As in a traditional apartment, his home also offers a bathroom and a sleeping area.
The construction was a real feat for him, but now he is proud of his house made of two shipping containers. “I enjoy the accessibility to the environment that I have,” Low said, explaining that he enjoys camping and being outside. With his house, Low wanted to create a building that harmonizes with the environment. Low explains: “I hit the jackpot with the location”.
